If only I had a new car. If only I had a nice house. If only I was married. If only I had that job. We are all looking for something just a little beyond what we have, believing that if we can only take possession of something then all our problems we be solved!
The Philistines thought that if only they could get their hands on the ark of the covenant, everything would turn out all right. For seven months, they suffered under affliction until they decided they had enough. Their plan had backfired. What they thought was good for them them turned out to be a disaster. They decided to "return the ark of the god of Israel" (v.3a) and "pay honor to Israel's god" (v.5a).
We're experts at thinking we know what we need. We think we know what is best for us. But it doesn't always work that way.
Instead of looking for something or some situation to be the answer to all our problems, we need to look to the Lord himself. His grace is sufficient and he will supply every need in his time.
It is not the things you have, it is the things that have you which are the problem.
